Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools have a reputation for being expensive imported hardware, which stops a lot of families from trying them at all. That reputation is outdated — several genuinely good options are free, run on a basic Android phone, and work offline once installed.
Jellow Communicator, built by IIT Bombay, is free, works offline, and includes Hindi, Marathi, and several other Indian languages alongside English — a real advantage over imported apps built around English-only vocabularies. LetMeTalk is a similar free, offline option. Google's own Action Blocks app turns routine actions — calling a specific person, opening a specific app — into large, one-tap buttons, and it's free and already built into most Android phones.
Paid options like Avaz AAC add more polish and a wider vocabulary set for a modest monthly cost, and are worth trying via their free trial before committing. For picture boards, free printable Hindi boards are available online; Konkani-specific ones aren't, so the common workaround is printing a Hindi or English board and handwriting Konkani words underneath.
